5 λικμάω
Grammatical information: v.Meaning: `part the grain from the chaff, winnow', metaph. `crush, destroy' (Ε 500, B., X., LXX, pap.).Other forms: aor. λικμῆσαι.Derivatives: λικμητηρ ́winnower', λικμητρίς `w. fan', also λικμήτωρ, - τής; - ητήριον `w. fan, shovel'; - ητὸς `winnowing, scatter'; - ητικός `belonging to w.'. λικμός, prob. backformation' w. fan', λικμαία surname of Demeter. λίκνον n. `w. fan' (Arist.), sacred basket with first-fruits in Demeter-cult' (S., AP; cf. Nilsson Gr. Rel. 1, 128; λικνοφόρος also `cradle' (h. Merc., Call.), λικνίτης surn. of Dionysos (Orph., Plu.; Redard 210, v, Wilamowitz Glaube 2, 376), - ὶτις ( τροφή S. Ichn. 269), λικνίζω = λικμάω (pap.). - ν(ε)ίκλον τὸ λίκνον H. - ἰκμᾶν λικμᾶν, σῖτον καθαίρειν; ἰκμῶντο ἐσείοντο, ἐπνεοντο H, ἀνικμώμενα (Pl. Ti. 53a; vv.ll. ἀναλικνώμενα, ἀναλικμώμενα), ἀπ-ικμησαι, δι-ικμῶνται (Thphr.) Further from H. εὐ\<νί\> κμητο\<ν\> εὐλί\<κ\> μητον, ἀνικλώμενον ἀνακαθαιρόμενον (cf. on ἀνικμώμενα above) and the suffixless νικᾳ̃ λικμᾳ̃ ̃ νικεῖν (for - κᾶν?) λικμᾶν, νείκεσεν ἔκρινεν, εὐνικές εὐκρινές, νεικητήρ λικμητήρ. Μεγαρεῖς.Etymology: Popular word with variation of the form (as in popular words). If one may start from *νίκνον, *νικνᾶν, the forms λίκνον and νίκλον, prob. also νικμᾶν (in εὑνίκμητον) can be understood as dissimilated forms; further perhaps also λικμᾶν (on the formation Schwyzer 731) from νικμᾶν and, with loss of the anlaut, ἰκμᾶν, s. Bechtel Lex. s. λικμάω after Legerlotz KZ 8, 123f. and Schulze KZ 42. 380f. (= Kl. Schr. 58f.). Diff. on the variation μ:ν Schwyzer 338 (after J. Schmidt a. o.), on ἰκμᾶν J. Schmidt Kritik 108 n. 1 (from ἀνικμᾶν, haplologically for *ἀνα-νικμᾶν, wrongly interpreted). Cf. also Danielsson Eranos 14, 1ff. on the dark ἀπολεικαι (inscr. Miletos). - If one starts from *νίκ-νον, we get an attractive connection with the fullgrade and derived Lith. niekóju, -óti `winnow (corn)', Latv. niẽkât `swing groats in a mill' (Bugge Curt. Stud. 4, 335 f.); cf. the suffixless Greek forms above. Also Celtic forms have been compared, e.g. Welsh nithio, Bret. niza `winnow'. Lith. liekúoti `winnow (corn)' and Latv. lìekša `shovel' have nohing to do with λικμάω (they are folksetymological tranormations after lìkti `remain behind'. - WP. 2, 321, Pok. 761, Fraenkel Wb. s. niekóti m.Page in Frisk: 2,122-123Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > λικμάω

7 πάσσαλος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `plug, pin, peg, to hang sth. up to' (Il.).Other forms: Att. πάτταλος.Derivatives: Dimin. πασσαλ-ίσκος (Hp.) and - ιον (H.); - ιστής H. s. κυνδαλοπαίστης (s. κύνδαλος); - εύω, often w. προσ-, also w. δια-, κατα-, `to pin, to hang up' (Hdt., Att.) with the nom. instr. - εῖον (Plb., EM); - όομαι `to be provided with π.' (sch.), προσ-όω `to pin' (Thphr.). -- Beside it πάσσᾱξ, -ᾱκος m. `id.' (Megar., Ar. Ach. 763; like πόρπᾱξ, κνώδᾱξ a.o.; Chantraine Form. 381) with - άκιον, - ακίζω (H.); πασσάριος σταυρός H.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: First from *πάκι̯αλος with λ-suffix; to Lat. păc-iscor `conclude a treaty', prop. `make fast', παγ-ῆναι (with variation k: g); s. πήγνυμι. As intermediate we must posit an unknown noun: *πάσσα (\< *πακ-ι̯ᾰ), *-πασσος or *πάσσων (cf. on κνώδαλον)?; diff. Benveniste Origines 47 (s. also Schwyzer 483 w. n. 8). Independent, but also with l-suffix, Lat. pālus (from * pac-s-lo-s); here also Toch. A pyākäṣ (B pyāśi) `pole, stake' (Duchesne-Guillemin BSL 41, 159)? -- Lat. LW [loanword] pessulus `bolt' (on the meaning Rocco Glotta 32, 99); s. W.-Hofmann s.v. -- Derivation from *ph2k- is improbable: a pin has not become stiff (like ice). It has been sfatened, fixed to a wal or a pillar. The suffix - αλ- is pre-Greek, cannot be IE. (The words in -ᾱκ- seem Pre-Greek.) So prob. the whole word is Pre-Greek (*paky-al-)?Page in Frisk: 2,477Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > πάσσαλος

9 κολοβός
κολοβός zie kolosGrammatical information: adj.Meaning: `curtailed, maimed, short' (Pl., X., Arist., hell.);Compounds: as 1. member e. g. in κολοβό-κερκος `with docked tail' (LXX).Derivatives: κολόβιον n. `jack without sleeves' (pap.), also κολόβαξ (Gloss.); κολοβώδης `stunted, stumpy' (Polem. Phgn. [v. l.]), κολοβότης `stuntedness' (Plu.). Denomin. verbs: 1. κολοβόω `stunt, shorten' with κολόβωσις `mutilation', κολόβωμα `maimed, amputated member' (Arist.); 2. κολοβίζω `id.' 12 ῥόθος
Grammatical information: m.Meaning: `the roar of the waves, of the oars', metaph. `noise' in gen. (Hes., A. Opp.); `path, trail' (Nic., after Plu. in Hes. 13 Boeot.).Other forms: S. below.Compounds: Often as 2. member, e.g. ἁλί-ρροθος `roared around by the sea' (trag., Mosch.), ταχύ-ρροθοι λόγοι `quickly rushing words' (A.); παλι-ρρόθιος `rushing back' (Od., hell. epic). On ἐπίρροθος s. v.Derivatives: ῥόθιος, f. - ιάς `roaring, clamorous' (ep. ε 412, also late prose), mostly - ιον, - ια n. sg. a. pl. `roaring wave(s), breaking(s), high-tide, loud stroke of the oar', metaph. `noise, bluster, rush' (poet. Pi., trag. [mostly in lyr.], also late prose). -- To ῥόθος, prob. as denom. (cf. Schwyzer 726), ῥοθέω, also w. ἐπι-, δια-, `to roar, to clamour' (A., S.); ὁμο-, κακο-ρροθέω = ὁμο-, κακο-λογέω (Hp., S., E., Ar.); from ῥόθιον: ῥοθι-άζω `to make a rushing sound (with the oar)' (com.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Expressive word without agreement outside Greek. The comparison (Fick 2, 318) with Celt. words for `liquidity, stream', OCorn. stret gl. `latex', MCorn. streyth `stream' is semant. noncommittal and also phonetically not quite comvincing because of the final dentals (Celt. t = IE t, Gr. θ = IE dh). The connection of Germ. OHG stredan `seethe, whirl, boil' (J. Schmidt Voc. 2, 282 f.) has the same phonetical weaknesses. Further forms (also from Slav.) in Bq and WP. 2, 704f., Pok. 1001 f., where also on the analysis (Persson Stud. 46, 165) in sr-edh- (to ser- `stream'; s. ὁρμή). Cf. also W.-Hofmann s. fretum and verū. -- On ῥάθαγος s. ῥαθαπυγίζω. -- Cf. the gloss ῥάθαγος = ῥόθος sch. Nic. Th. 194, H. and ῥαθα- = ῥοθο-πυγίζω suggests that it is a Pre-Greek word (with variation).Page in Frisk: 2,661Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ῥόθος
